Wakool is known for its annual community-run events including the Wakool Fishing Classic and the Wakool Sheep Races, known as ‘The Melbourne Cup of the Bush’ where attendees can join in and win cash if their sheep runs first!
The Wakool area is nestled within a beautiful network of forest tracks, weaving through some of NSW’s most picturesque natural landscapes. Visitors can explore a variety of self-guided walking trails and scenic drives, immersing themselves in the rich cultural and natural heritage that has been cherished for generations, offering endless discoveries.
Wakool is central to many regional towns of interest and is within an hour’s drive of Deniliquin, Swan Hill and Echuca Moama.
Must Do’s:
- The Wakool area is a superb spot to head out fishing as the Edward, Niemur and Wakool Rivers are all nearby. Several significant creeks run via the town which are great places to fish for Murray cod, golden perch (yellow belly), silverfish (bream), redfin (English perch) and yabbies. - Follow one of the walking tracks, including the Wakool Soliders Settlers Memorial Walk, spreading out through the two small parks running from the Wakool Cenotaph at the meeting of Flinders, Cook and Dampier Streets is this wonderful community-driven walk.
